About
The relationships between my heritage as a second generation Mexican American and the connections to agriculture serves as the foundation of the art that I make. As a sculptor, I use these ideas through the combination of material, composition, form and abstraction. In my work, I incorporate natural elements found in the flora and agriculture to inform composition that are then paired with raw materials that could be commonly linked to trades such as; landscaping, tree trimming, and construction materials, like dirt, plaster, metal and wood. In context with my lineage in agriculture, I was taught these techniques at a young age and they have influenced my creative and craft process when making work by always considering how the process is tied to the art.
Although the designs are abstract, the choice of material and forms act as metaphors for the generations of labor related to organic cultivation, thereby embodying the physicality of effort and dedication to family. I say the abstraction in the work acts as a medium to express the immigration to a new land, while paying homage to the opportunities given to me by my ancestors. The art connects my heritage from Mexico and the United States culminating familial influence that has been dictated by immigration, that is directly attached to the land of Los Angeles that gave my grandfathers and grandmothers a place of opportunity, for work and family. This dedicated practice is what grounds my work and the messages it conveys.
